A Year of Progress: My Top 10 Moments of 2025
2025 has been a year of making a real difference for people across Blackpool South. As we welcome the New Year, here are the ten moments that defined the past twelve months for me
10. Building support for a world-class arena
When the council asked for views on the future of the Blackpool Central site, I launched a campaign for a world-class arena. More than 2,500 residents backed the idea, showing strong local ambition for a landmark venue.
9. Securing named neighbourhood officers
My pledge to secure a named neighbourhood police officer for every ward was delivered this summer. Having dedicated officers back on the beat is already helping to improve safety on our streets.
8. Securing two new SEND schools
After months of pressing the Government, funding was agreed for two new SEND schools. This commitment brings huge relief to parents whose children have been waiting too long for suitable support.
7. Discussing Blackpool with King Charles
At a Buckingham Palace reception, I had the privilege of meeting King Charles and Queen Camilla. We spoke about Blackpool’s potential, and the Queen shared her love of watching Blackpool Week on Strictly Come Dancing.
6. 10,000 constituents helped
In December, I opened my 10,000th piece of casework. From housing to health, benefits to crime, helping residents with everyday challenges remains the most important part of my job.
5. Pride in Place
Securing £20m for Layton and Grange Park was a major victory. This community-driven investment will support long-term improvements to the neighbourhoods.
4. Going Beyond the Prom
Over the summer recess, I spent two weeks touring the constituency, visiting amazing communities and working with residents, volunteers and local partners to tackle issues street by street.
3. Scrapping the cap
Along with colleagues and campaigners, I’ve been pushing the government to scrap the Tories’ punitive and ideological two-child benefit cap – last month they listened, helping 3,950 children in Blackpool South.
2. Hosting Blackpool Jobs Fair
In February, I hosted Blackpool’s biggest ever jobs fair, bringing together over 4,000 jobseekers and 100 employers offering 1,500 jobs. More than 500 people secured roles on the day.
1. Infant formula win
A year after launching a campaign for affordable infant formula, the Government announced reforms that will help families save up to £500 before their child’s first birthday.
