One Year On: Labour’s delivering for Blackpool
From cutting NHS waiting lists to banning no-fault evictions and boosting wages, Labour’s first year in government is making a real difference for people in Blackpool. Here are the top 10 achievements of this government that are already improving lives in Blackpool.
10. Ending the strikes
No more chaos. Just common sense. Within weeks of taking office, we ended the junior doctor and train strikes. That means fewer cancelled appointments, more NHS staff back on the job and reliable trains when you need them. It’s basic – but after years of disruption and devaluing vital workers, it’s made a real difference.
9. Cleaning up our seas – taking on polluters
No more turning a blind eye. Labour has taken real action against the water companies dumping sewage in our seas and rivers – including here on the Fylde Coast. A new law blocks bonuses for polluting execs, brings in tougher fines and even allows prison time for those who break the rules. The days of profit before people and planet are over.
8. Taking on rogue landlords
Your home should be safe and secure – full stop. We’ve banned no-fault evictions, so renters can’t be kicked out for no reason. We’re investing £39 billion into building affordable homes and we’ve launched Homes for Heroes to guarantee a roof over the heads of veterans, care leavers and domestic abuse survivors. Blackpool deserves safe homes people can actually afford – and we’re delivering.
7. Boosting workers’ rights
Work should pay – and now, it finally does. Labour’s implemented the National Living Wage – putting up to £1,400 a year more in people’s pockets. We’ve ended zero-hours contracts, banned fire and rehire and passed a new law giving every worker basic rights from day one on the job. That means sick pay, fair contracts and the right to flexible working. This is about respect for working people.
6. Supporting small businesses
This government is standing up for the little guys who contribute in a big way to our economy. Small businesses are the backbone of towns like Blackpool. We’ve cracked down on late payments, unblocked solar and wind energy projects to slash energy bills and launched a National Wealth Fund to back new industries. This is real support to help small businesses grow and hire local people.
5. Tackling the cost of living
Nobody should have to choose between heating and eating. We’re helping 6 million families with energy bills this winter through the expanded Warm Home Discount. We’ve frozen fuel duty, extended the Household Support Fund and helped more pensioners access Pension Credit. Help is finally getting to the people who need it most.
4. Transforming education
From investing in Blackpool schools to breakfast clubs – we’re making sure every child gets a fair start in life. We’re investing in school infrastructure to create modern learning environments, rolling out free breakfast clubs for all primary school kids, launched a recruitment drive for 6,500 new teachers, reformed apprenticeships and scrapped unfair Ofsted grading. We’ve also expanded free school meals to over 100,000 kids. Every child deserves opportunity – not just those born in the right postcode.
3. Making our streets safe
We’re delivering policing that works for our communities. We’ve started restoring neighbourhood policing and launched new domestic abuse protection orders. The Safer Streets Mission is underway – with a focus on making women and girls safe and holding criminals to account. The days of ignoring crime and pretending it’s not happening are over.
2. Taking control of our borders
The government is tackling illegal immigration head on. We scrapped the Rwanda scheme and invested in the new Border Security Command which is already shutting down smuggling gangs. Labour is clearing the asylum backlog, cracking down on illegal working, has removed over 30,000 people without the right to remain since taking office and has committed to shutting down asylum hotels.
1. Rebuilding the NHS
We promised two million more NHS appointments in year one. We delivered over 3.6 million – seven months early. GP numbers are up, junior doctors are back at work and waiting lists are finally falling. Labour’s 10-year plan to rebuild the NHS is underway – with a real focus on prevention, mental health, and shifting care back into communities. For the first time in years, the NHS is moving forward – and patients are feeling the difference.
