RMT’s LGBT+ conference comes to Blackpool
It was an honour to speak at the RMT’s LGBT+ Members’ Conference here in Blackpool last week – a town that’s always been a little louder, a little brighter, and a little prouder than most.
Blackpool holds a special place in the story of LGBT+ life in this country. For generations, it’s been more than a holiday destination – it’s been a place of escape and expression. A place where queer people, particularly from working-class backgrounds, could come to feel free. Behind the sequins and stag dos was something deeper: a space where difference wasn’t just accepted, it was celebrated.
Many found their first taste of freedom here. For some, that meant dancing. For others, drag. And for many, it meant simply walking down the street without fear.
I’ve marched in Blackpool Pride for many years but last year, I had the privilege of marching as the town’s MP, shoulder to shoulder with our vibrant LGBT+ community and allies. And I’ll be proud to do so again next month under this year’s theme: Pride Beside the Seaside.
But as we celebrate, we must also stay alert to the threats our communities still face. Recent legal rulings have caused fear and confusion, particularly for trans and non-binary people. I want to be clear: I stand in unwavering solidarity with the trans community. Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because I represent Blackpool – a town that has always opened its arms to those who are marginalised.
The fight for equality isn’t over. Whether it’s challenging prejudice, demanding better rights at work, or simply showing up as your full self – these are all acts of courage. They remind us that pride is protest and solidarity is our superpower.
